Participating in the 16th annual International Conference on the Science of Botanicals (ICSB), it became clear that academic research institutions, regulatory agencies, and dietary supplement/herbal medicine manufacturers want the same thing – to keep consumers of natural products safe from harm and provide high quality products, all within a GMP framework.

One of the fundamental issues facing the industry is ensuring scientists are properly trained on the authentication of raw materials to certify final product quality and safety.  The debate is also about which testing methods should be used.

For many years, Waters and the National Center for Natural Products Research (NCNPR) at the University of Mississippi have enjoyed a productive research collaboration.  Dr. Kate Yu (Waters Corp.) began discussions six years ago with Dr. Larry Walker and Dr. Ikhlas Khan at NCNPR  to advance the creation of a natural products training facility.

Today, that dream is a reality, marking the beginning of a more formal, lasting partnership with the official opening of the Natural Products Training Center at the University of Mississippi. The lab will provide training for industry and regulators alike, to understand not only how to use the equipment, but why and for what purpose.

I am proud of the Waters team and our colleagues at the University of Mississippi — for their vision, tenacity, and leadership, to make training in Natural Products testing a reality.
